Getting unfair negative feedback removed on TCGplayer

A bad rating needs a decision before it needs a response: resolve the buyer's real problem, ask them to revise, or ask TCGplayer to review feedback that falls outside its policy. Here is how to tell those paths apart.

By Christopher Neale, Founder at Hoard Updated Sep 16, 2026

Negative feedback is not automatically permanent, but it is not automatically removable either. TCGplayer reviews the evidence in the order thread, along with account history and trends, before it decides whether to remove or adjust a comment or rating. Your first job is to choose the right ask.

Start here: if the buyer has a valid order problem, resolve it under the refund and return policy, then politely ask whether they will revise their feedback. If the feedback is harmful, irrelevant, manipulative, or about an event outside your control, request a policy review instead. Do not make a refund, replacement, or other resolution conditional on a changed rating.

Choose the right path before you escalate

1. Resolve a real order issue, then ask for a revision

Use this when the buyer's complaint is about something you need to make right: the wrong card, a condition problem, damage, or a missing order. Reply in the order message thread and follow the applicable policy. Once the buyer agrees the issue is resolved, TCGplayer says you can ask them to revise their original rating and comment. That is a request, not a demand.

2. Request a feedback-policy review

Escalate when the feedback itself appears to violate the policy, or when it is tied to a circumstance the policy says is outside the seller's control. TCGplayer says it removes harmful, inappropriate, irrelevant, extortionate, or rating-manipulation feedback. It may remove neutral or negative feedback about buyer-caused cancellations or address problems, a correctly disclosed issue on a Listing with Photos, certain buyer account or post-shipment change issues, and qualifying delivery, customs, or carrier-delay problems.

Its policy also lists buyer's-remorse returns, returns and refunds handled under the policy, identified TCGplayer technical issues, and closed order or payment disputes where the seller met their obligations. The word may matters for the discretionary categories: a policy match is a reason to request review, not a promise of removal.

3. Accept the feedback and fix the pattern

If the comment is a buyer's opinion of an otherwise ordinary transaction and does not fit a policy category, an escalation is unlikely to change it. TCGplayer explicitly says it is not in a position to contradict buyers' opinions or judgments of items. Treat that rating as a signal to check your listing accuracy, packing, grading, or response process instead.

What to gather before you send anything

A short, verifiable record is more useful than an argument. Before you reply or escalate, assemble:

Do not pad the request with speculation about the buyer. Do not post personal information. And do not trade a resolution for better feedback: TCGplayer's policy treats feedback used to manipulate ratings as removable.

How to ask the buyer to revise feedback

Find the rating on your Feedback page, open its order number, then open the associated message thread. If you have not messaged the buyer before, the seller instructions call this Contact Buyer; otherwise use View Messages. Solve the reported issue first. Then keep the revision request brief and optional:

Message template

Hi [buyer name], I’m sorry this order did not land the way it should have. We have now [state the completed resolution: refunded the affected card / sent the agreed replacement / confirmed the delivery detail]. If this resolves the concern you raised, would you consider revising your feedback to reflect the outcome? Either way, thank you for giving us the chance to address it.

Keep the resolution and revision request separate. A buyer may decide not to revise, and that does not make their feedback improper. TCGplayer has instructions for buyers who choose to update feedback.

How to request TCGplayer review

For feedback that belongs on the policy-review path, open the message thread for the specified order and select Escalate This Thread at the top. A team member reviews the request. TCGplayer says it will email you if feedback qualifies for removal; if it does not, it says it will explain how the feedback aligns with policy, although it may not share every review factor.

Escalation template

Order #[order number]. I am requesting a review under the Seller Feedback Policy. The feedback says: “[exact feedback].” The relevant policy category is [category]. Timeline: [date and event], [date and event], [date and event]. The supporting record is in this thread: [tracking / listing disclosure / refund or return action]. Please review the [comment, rating, or both] against that policy.

Delivery issues are not a blanket removal category

A late or missing package does not, by itself, guarantee that negative feedback comes off. The feedback policy points to delivery issues where tracking shows delivery or handling expectations were met, or where an identifiable natural disaster or unexpected event caused a carrier delay. TCGplayer Safeguard blocks feedback through a narrower path: it applies when the buyer reported the package missing, the order shipped within the 48-hour window with tracking showing movement, and the seller resolved it with a refund or an agreed replacement. Check the tracking and the policy before presenting a delivery complaint as a removal request.

If the dispute driving the feedback started as a claim the card wasn't as described, read how that dispute actually plays out before you escalate. The resolution path affects how you frame the removal request.

Keeping this from becoming a recurring problem

A review or revision fixes one rating, not the reason it happened. If the same category keeps generating negative feedback (grading misses, address confusion, slow shipping on one lane), that is a process problem upstream of any individual escalation. The TCGplayer refunds pillar covers the resolution side. Hoard helps you keep refunds attached to the order, buyer, and product line so repeat causes are easier to spot than they are in a monthly total.

TCGplayer rates your store. You can rate your buyers in Hoard.

A feedback appeal addresses the rating on TCGplayer; it does not preserve what you learned about the buyer for the next order. In Hoard's customer view, you can give a buyer your own 1–5-star rating and keep it beside their order and refund history. Hoard may suggest a rating from captured history, but your manual rating takes precedence. It stays inside Hoard. It is not posted to TCGplayer or shown to the buyer. Use it as a prompt to review the next order, not as a verdict on a disputed claim.

Common questions

Can negative feedback be removed from a TCGplayer seller profile?

Sometimes. TCGplayer removes harmful, inappropriate, irrelevant, extortionate, or rating-manipulation feedback. It may remove other neutral or negative feedback when the facts fit specific buyer, delivery, return, technical, or resolved-dispute categories. The review considers the evidence and can consider account history and trends.

How do I actually request feedback removal?

Open the message thread for the specified order and select "Escalate This Thread" at the top. State the relevant policy category, the exact feedback, a short timeline, and where the supporting record appears in the thread.

Should I ask the buyer to change feedback or escalate it?

Resolve a valid order issue first, then politely ask the buyer whether they will revise their rating. Escalate when the feedback itself appears to break policy or relates to a documented circumstance outside your control. Do not condition a resolution on a feedback change.

Does a late package automatically qualify for feedback removal?

No. The feedback policy identifies specific delivery circumstances, including tracking that shows expectations were met or an identifiable carrier delay outside the seller's control. Separately, TCGplayer Safeguard blocks feedback on a reported missing package when it shipped within the 48-hour window, tracking shows movement, and the seller resolved it with a refund or agreed replacement.

Can I rate a buyer who left negative feedback?

Yes, inside Hoard you can set your own private 1–5-star buyer rating on their customer record. It overrides Hoard's suggested score for your view of that buyer, but it does not change their TCGplayer feedback or the outcome of a policy review. See Hoard's customer tools.
