Alphabetical and by-set storage need no system at all. Chaos sort needs a reliable one, but scales further. Neither is correct on its own. The right answer depends on how many cards you're storing and how much you trust your location data.
Every TCG seller stores singles one of two ways. Alphabetical or by-set storage puts a card where you'd expect to find it: a location a person can guess from the card's name alone. Chaos sort shelves cards in whatever order they arrive, with no attempt at a predictable position, and relies on a system, usually a SKU or bin code, to say where a specific card actually is.
Both systems work. The question isn't which one is right in general. It's which one is right for your inventory size, and what happens when the system behind it breaks.
Alphabetical and by-set storage require nothing beyond the shelf itself. A new employee can find a card without training, because the location follows a rule anyone already knows: the alphabet, or the set list. There's no bin code to look up, no software to open, no label to trust. For a small store, that's not a limitation. It's the whole appeal.
The tradeoff shows up as inventory grows. Card Clerk, a vendor that builds chaos-sort tooling, writes that "misfiled cards essentially disappear from your inventory until discovered by chance during browsing," and that "as your inventory expands, even experienced employees take longer to locate specific singles." That's a real failure mode, not a hypothetical one: every alphabetical system depends on every card actually being where the alphabet says it should be, and a single misfile breaks that assumption for exactly one card, silently, until someone happens to notice.
At a few thousand cards, a misfile here and there is a minor annoyance. At the volume TCG Sync says a mid-size store actually runs, 50,000 to 200,000 line items, the same failure mode compounds. More cards means more chances to misfile, and a bigger catalog makes each individual misfile harder to notice by accident.
Chaos sort removes the assumption that a location has to be guessable. Cards go on the shelf in arrival order, and a system, not a person's memory, records exactly where each one landed. Picking no longer depends on a picker knowing the alphabet or the set list. It depends on the system telling them the right bin, every time.
That's the whole tradeoff in one sentence: chaos sort scales past the point where alphabetical storage starts breaking down, but only because it moves the burden of accuracy from a memorized position to a tracked one. If that tracked position is wrong, a chaos-sort store has no fallback. Nobody can glance at the shelf and guess where a card should be, because nothing about chaos-sort shelving is guessable by design. A misfile in an alphabetical store is a slow search. A location error in a chaos-sort store, with no memorized layout to fall back on, can be worse.
